Welsh National Opera takes you back to school with a brand-new production of Mozart’s comic opera Così fan tutte aka The School for Lovers directed by Max Hoehn (The Consul). Set in the early 1970s, four sixth formers discover that falling in love can be incredible, awkward, and complicated in this coming-of-age tale.
If you’ve ever watched Love Island, then you’ll be familiar with Casa Amor – the ultimate test of loyalty where contestants are placed face to face with other potential suitors. That’s pretty much what happens in this opera. Così fan tutteis a comic opera and in our version follows a group of students who are manipulated into tempting situations to test their love and teach them a lesson. Featuring the marvellous music of Mozart, why not experience this brand new staging and discover why this opera has been a hit since 1790.
The students are given a valuable lesson in love, life and liberty when their teacher involves them in a secret experiment. Played out to some of Mozart’s most ravishing music, they are challenged to re-think their own identities and relationships with each other as they are confronted with a series of amusing scenarios designed to deceive.
Sung in Italian, with subtitles in English.
Bristol Hippodrome
The Bristol Hippodrome, the city’s very own West End theatre, opened its doors on 16 December 1912 when the curtain rose for the first time on what was generally agreed to be Oswald Stoll’s most magnificent provincial theatre.
It is a superb example of the grand architecture of the late Victorian era and is one of the masterpieces of design by Frank Matcham, the most eminent theatre architect of his time.
Towards the beginning of the century, the theatre staged a variety of acts as a Music Hall. Since then, and due to the fact that it has one of the largest theatre stages in Britain, The Bristol Hippodrome has established itself on the touring circuit for all major musical productions, thus becoming known as Bristol’s West End Theatre.
