Our enchanting Edwardian theatre is bursting with history and architectural opulence, and our exciting tour is full to the brim with interesting facts and tales of the stars who have performed on our impressive stage - you may even get to hear some spooky ghost stories that really are the stuff of legends.

Take a peek at the ordinarily off-limits areas that only the lucky few get to experience, while our historic Grade II listed opulent interiors and resplendent auditorium are sure to make you gasp.

The tour will be concluded with refreshments in our Dress Circle Bar giving you some time to soak in the theatrical sights and chat about your favourite stories from the day.

Tours will last approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.

Tours do not include show ticket and are subject to availability. Routes may change and involve a number of stairs.

Backstage access is subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed.

Vesta Tilley laid the foundation stone of what is now the Sunderland Empire on 29 September 1906 and took to the stage on 1 July 1907 to officially declare the theatre open. Masterminded by two of the contemporary heads of British theatre, Edward Moss and Osward Stoll, the Sunderland Empire Theatre has undergone many changes since it opened but remains the North East’s premier entertainment venue.
