The unchained passion of Tchaikovsky’s sweeping Fifth is a story of passion, triumph and love told in melodies that you will never forget. Conductor, Anna Handler is a rising star in America and following Dvořák’s wonderful Carnival Overture she is joined by Steven Osborne to play Beethoven at his most operatic and most poetic in his Fourth Piano Concerto.

Everyone knows the famous slow movement from Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.21 featured in the film Elvira Madigan and Martin Roscoe will make the music ‘spring to  life’. What better way to commence your Festive celebrations than to hear Prokofiev’s Cinderella Suite….without doubt one of his most popular and melodious compositions. Maestro Ben Gernon opens the programme with Haydn’s superb Oxford Symphony.

Soloist: Karen Gomyo

Karen Gomyo, a sensational Japanese born violinist, makes her debut in our series and will show exactly why in Tchaikovsky’s glorious concerto. The rest of the programme is high voltage with John Storgårds bringing his special virtuosity to Sibelius’s symphonic portrait of a nation awakening to freedom.

Antonin Dvořák, lost amidst the tall buildings and liners of New York longs for a distant homeland. The grand emotions and glorious tunes of his symphony from the new world has always been a huge favourite in Stoke-on-Trent. Mozart wrote his brilliantly witty ‘Linz’ symphony in four days flat….a masterpiece! Conductor/soloist Julian Rachlin makes his series debut playing Mozart’s exciting third violin concerto composed when he was only 19!

The Victoria Hall was built in 1888 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. It was revamped in the mid-nineties and has since then been at the heart of the Cultural Quarter, alongside its sister venue The Regent Theatre. It has established itself as one of the most popular venues on the touring circuit playing host to the likes of Paul Weller, Morrissey and Jimmy Carr.
