"Reworked, refreshed and remarkably vibrant"

The Times

Utterly delicious – a dazzling extravaganza
- Sunday Telegraph
Truly, truly scrumptious
- Independent on Sunday

With family-sized helpings of Bourne’s trademark wit, pathos and magical fantasy, Nutcracker! follows Clara’s bittersweet journey from a darkly comic Christmas Eve at Dr. Dross’ Orphanage, through a shimmering, ice-skating winter wonderland to the scrumptious candy kingdom of Sweetieland, influenced by the lavish Hollywood musicals of the 1930’s.

Tchaikovsky’s glorious score and Anthony Ward’s delectable sets and costumes combine with Bourne’s dazzling choreography to create a fresh and charmingly irreverent interpretation of the classic. Expect a sprinkling of delicious new surprises in this reinvented production for 2021.

Hailed by The Observer as "the undisputed king of dance theatre", master storyteller Matthew Bourne and his New Adventures company have produced some of the most successful dance productions of the last two decades including The Red Shoes, Swan Lake, Cinderella, Edward Scissorhands and most recently his acclaimed reimagining of Romeo and Juliet.

What the critics say

In a nutshell, it’s a cracker!
- The Times
A REAL TREAT. Like a sherbet lemon in a sea of treacle: sharp, smart and tangy on the tongue.

Keeping you safe in the theatre

We are committed to keeping our audiences safe whilst they enjoy their visit. To ensure you feel safe, secure, and comfortable during your visit with us, we have implemented the below measures which we ask you to familiarise yourself with prior to your visit. We cannot wait to welcome you back into our theatre!

Before coming to the theatre

Face coverings

Our audiences and staff will need to wear face coverings whilst in the venue, except for when they are eating or drinking. Face coverings are not required for those with certain medical conditions, or children under the age of 11. We will provide a disposable face covering if you need one, upon entry to the theatre

If you or a party member are unwell

Please do not attend our theatre if you or any of your party are displaying symptoms of Covid-19, have been in contact with someone diagnosed with Covid-19, or if you have been instructed to self-isolate. Should this be the case, please contact our customer service team as soon as possible to arrange a refund, or to reschedule your booking

Government test and trace

We are supporting NHS Test and Trace (England) and NHS Test and Protect (Scotland) by requesting the lead booker contact details in the booking process, providing the option for other attendees to provide their details directly, and sharing these details only if requested under the schemes. If you do not wish us to share your details for this purpose, please let us know. Please refer to our Privacy Policy for more information

Access patrons

We are committed to providing great access to our venues. Find more information about access and support, plus how to get in contact about your requirements, on the Bristol Hippodrome Access page.

Arriving at the theatre

Temperature checking

To protect the health of both our audiences and our staff, we will be using thermal cameras and non-contact thermometers to screen temperatures of visitors and employees before they enter our venues. Audience members who display a raised temperature above 37.8⁰C or refuse the screening (along with their household) may be refused entry.

Distributed entry points and times

Where venue layouts allow, we will aim to support social distancing by making use of all available entrances. We may also stagger entry and exit times to ease congestion. Where possible, you will receive your entry time and location via email, in good time prior to the performance. Where it is not possible to communicate this information in advance, our staff will direct you on arrival

Digital tickets

To help minimise use of paper in our venues, where you can, we advise that you show your ticket on your phone, rather than bringing a printout

Inside the theatre

Social distancing

Please respect social distancing whilst queuing to enter, and once inside our venues. We have introduced clear markings and signage to indicate where to wait and queue at venue entrances, in bars, for the toilets, and on entry to the auditorium.

Cleaning and hand washing

We have stepped up the cleaning in our venues to ensure a safe and clean environment for all. Hand sanitiser stations will be placed throughout our venues.

Contactless payments

Where possible, please use your phone or your contactless bank card to make payments at the points of sale

Food and beverage at your seat

We offer free seat delivery pre-show and during the interval through our Ordertorium app. So sit back, relax, order your favourite food and drink from our menu, and one of our helpful members of staff will deliver your order to your seat. We recommend you download our app now in advance of your visit.
