Written by Henrik Ibsen in 1882 and set in 19th century provincial Norway, the play has been reworked many times in different contexts. An Enemy of the People speaks to us today more than ever, wherever we are. Ibsen’s themes in An Enemy of the People are hypocrisy, freedom of expression and the tyranny of easily manipulated majority opinion. All this is in the context of the choices that must be made by Dr Teresa Stockmann when her discoveries lead to a clash between public health, vested interests, and the economic well-being of the community. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
