Sunderland Empire
Admiral Sandro returns victorious to Venice to prepare for his marriage to the daughter of the Doge. He learns that his childhood love, Nicoletta, is about to become a nun, and when they meet they declare their love for each other. Nicoletta's guardian Bishop Olivolo overhears their declaration. The Bishop is also in love with Nicoletta and he vows to destroy Sandro.

In this sumptuous reimagining of the 19th-century classic La Bayadère, Carlos Acosta moves the action to Renaissance Venice. With the original score by Ludwig Minkus played live by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, gorgeous designs by Anna Fleischle and show-stopping dance that includes the famous Kingdom of the Shades, this new production promises to be the ballet sensation of 2027.
Don't miss this powerful story of love, lust, betrayal and murder.

Vesta Tilley laid the foundation stone of what is now the Sunderland Empire on 29 September 1906 and took to the stage on 1 July 1907 to officially declare the theatre open. Masterminded by two of the contemporary heads of British theatre, Edward Moss and Oswald Stoll, the Sunderland Empire Theatre has undergone many changes since it opened but remains the North East’s premier entertainment venue.
