Galileo by Brecht is based on the life of the seventeenth century astronomer and physicist Galileo Galilei. Galileo makes an explosive discovery about the universe with his invention – the telescope, and this discovery leads to a seismic shift in scientific thinking. To challenge the idea that the earth is the centre of the universe is to challenge the all-powerful Roman Catholic Church.
Through Galileo’s struggles against the Church, Brecht shows a compelling portrait of the great scientist, torn between his scientific principles and his desire for the comfortable life that compliance with authority affords.
Mark Ravenhill's translation of Brecht's play captures the excitement of scientific discovery, the contradictions in Galileo's character and the disillusionment of his followers when he recanted.
