Master clown Chris Cresswell leads you in an exploration of the art and practice of masks and the theatre clown.

School of Clowns - The Meeting of Clown and Mask course

Inspired by the teachings of Jacques Lecoq, Chris will encourage you to unleash the creative possibilities within clown and mask work; helping you find that magical place where everything is possible, where the mind heart and body integrate into the authentic simplicity of the theatre clown.

Aimed at actors, theatre-makers, musicians, dancers and circus performers who would like to research and develop skills in theatrical clowning, the course will help you develop your own clown persona through the use of mask, understand timing, technique and performance of this fascinating art form, and develop confidence and trust in your impulses so that you bring the joy of laughter to your audiences.

Chris is currently an Associate Lecturer at Chichester University leading the clown mask module. He has trained and performed with leading circus and theatre companies including Ra Ra Zoo, John Mowat, Nola Rae, Theatre de Complicite, Commotion Theatre company and DNA animation theatre.

Participants from our first School of Clowns course said:

It's enabled me to use the skills I have but also improve on them and I've met some lovely new friends. It's brought me a lot of joy because I don't feel that I'm a deaf person in this environment, thank you Chris’ Sarah

‘It's been so great meeting lots of people who are very talented and learning more from Chris, it's been life affirming.’ Amanda

The environment that’s being created in these classes is where you feel able to take risks. All performance is about taking risks and being prepared to fail –because the failure will create more opportunities, so if the environment feels safe, the performance can be dangerous.’ Neil

Course fee payable in advance only. Session dates: Wed 10am - 12pm 18, 25 Jun, 2, 9, 16, 23 July.
