Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty
A Gothic Romance
Music by Tchaikovsky
New Adventures’ 25th Birthday culminates with the world premiere of Matthew Bourne’s latest re-imagining of a ballet classic.
Sleeping Beauty sees Bourne return to the music of Tchaikovsky to complete the trio of ballet masterworks that started with Nutcracker! and the international smash hit, Swan Lake.
This timeless fairy tale, about a young girl cursed to sleep for 100 years, was turned into a legendary ballet in 1890. We meet our heroine, Aurora, at her Christening, when fairies and vampires fed the gothic imagination, before the story moves forward a century to the modern day.
Matthew Bourne’s haunting new production is a Gothic Romance for all ages; a supernatural love story that even the passage of time cannot hinder.
‘Welcome to the Bourne supremacy. Cheeky, accessible but with a powerful emotional undertow’
**** 'In Bourne's clever Gothic rewrite, he has discovered something beguiling and true’
**** 'Bourne’s exuberant reimagining’
**** 'Ravishing. Bourne's got another hit on his hands’
‘Sumptuous, dramatic, eerie and captivating. Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty is a many splendoured thing’
‘Ben Bunce is a masterpiece of sexy, delicious evil. Dominic North is a tender loveable Leo; Hannah Vassallo is a feisty, free spirited Aurora’
‘An eye-popping gothic delight, its best moments are unforgettable’
‘Britain’s most successful choreographer will blow your mind with his sheer imagination, wit and brio’
