Step Free Access and Wheelchairs

The Grand Opera House does not have a lift. Access to the Foyer Bar, Dress Circle and Grand Circle is via stairs only.

There are 10 wheelchair spaces available in Stalls at the end of rows G, H, M, N and R, some of which are transfer to seat only. These will need to be requested at the time of booking. Please also speak to our access team, prior to booking, if you intend to visit with a motorised mobility wheelchair/scooter. Access to stalls is available via the street level access entrance on King Street. Please note that our King Street entrance is on a hill which heads down towards the river and is cobbled with a slope. When you arrive at the street-level access entrance, please ring the bell to the right hand side of the door and a member of staff will greet you there.

Entrance – Please be aware the auditorium opens 30 minutes prior to the show, therefore we recommend any wheelchair users, and any other access patrons who require immediate seating, arrive no earlier than this.

Accessible Toilets - There are accessible toilet facilities at the back of the Stalls auditorium. This is a separate, accessible, private and unisex facility located next to the street-level access entrance door with baby change facilities

Visual Impairment Services - Information about our venue’s audio description, touch tours and other visual services can be found on our Visual Impairment Services page. We recommend seats in the front half of the stalls from row D forwards for customers who require a closer view of the stage or for any Audio Described shows. Touch Tours may also be available to accompany Audio Described performances, please follow the link to contact our access team who will be happy to check. Hearing Impairment Services - Information about our venue’s hearing enhancement systems, signed performances and other hearing services can be found on our Hearing Impairment Services page. Our venue has an T Loop system. Please speak to any of our ushers upon arrival for details. The best locations for you to use this system in our auditorium are front and mid stalls.

Assistance Dogs - Assistance dogs are welcome in all parts of the theatre. If you wish to bring your assistance dog to the theatre, please advise the Box Office when booking your tickets. Your dog is welcome to sit with you in the auditorium however please note that some shows include special effects, e.g. strobe lighting, smoke, pyrotechnics and loud bangs. Alternatively, we can organise for a member of staff to care for your dog during the performance and provide them with some drinking water.

Seat Width - The seats at Grand Opera House York have fixed arms and are 41-43 cm (16-17 inches) wide on average in the Stalls and Dress Circle, and 38-41 cm (15-16 inches) wide on average in the Grand Circle.
