Steve Hillage is recognised as one of the 20th Century’s most influential guitarists and producers and has a long and distinguished history with Friars Aylesbury.
He first played Friars in December 1973 at the Borough Assembly Hall with his band Gong who are reforming for this 2019 tour and will be supporting Steve on 15 November. In October 1975 he released his first solo album Fish Rising and in 1976 his follow up album L which resulted in his first Friars solo headliner in October 1976. This was one of the fastest selling Friars gigs of all time. Two more Friars gigs followed in October 1977 on his Motivation Radio tour and in 1978 in conjunction with his Green album which was produced by Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason.
Since then he has been associated with a myriad of artists and bands including Kevin Ayres, Mike Oldfield, Hawkwind, Sting, Ozric Tentacles and Sham’69. As a producer he has produced The Charlatans, Simple Minds, Genesis’s Tony Banks and Robyn Hitchcock among many others.
Like Bowie, Steve Hillage has always been re-inventing himself so it was no surprise that in the late eighties he became involved with techno/ambient music and along with his wife Miquette Giraudy (who played with Steve on all his solo Friars gigs) formed System 7 which had collaborations with The Orb’s Alex Paterson, Laurent Garnier, Youth and Paul Oakenfold.
For this monumental return to Friars Aylesbury Steve will be playing tracks from his 1970’s albums Green, L, Fish Rising and Motivation Radio, all of which had top 40 successes. Reviews of shows earlier in 2019 have been astonishing. Expect to be moved.

As part of Aylesbury Waterside Theatre’s commitment to accessibility and theatre for all, the venue has announced their support of the Sunflower Lanyard scheme. Launching to coincide with Learning Disability Week Mon 17 – Sun 23 Jun the sunflower lanyards are an initiative enabling those with a hidden disability who may require additional help to be easily recognised and assisted as needed.
Following a social media post in April highlighting the theatre’s relaxed performances as part of Autism Awareness Week, a patron came forward with feedback on how customer experience could be improved for those living with autism. Andy Rotherham from Aylesbury mentioned the sunflower scheme and also how the theatre could benefit from having quiet areas for customers needing a quiet space pre-show and during the interval. As well as implementing the lanyard initiative which signals to theatre staff that a customer has a hidden disability hence enabling appropriate care and support to be delivered in a non-intrusive manner, furniture has been moved in the venue allowing for two quieter breakout areas in Circle 2 and on the Promenade to be utilised.
In the UK 700,000 people live with autism, 1 million have learning disabilities, 850,000 have dementia and 11 million people have some sort of hearing loss. Hidden disabilities include, but are not limited to, dementia, autism, learning disabilities, anxiety issues, mental health impairments and hearing loss. The Waterside is in good company with the sunflower lanyard scheme which is already being used in airports including Gatwick, Heathrow, Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol and Inverness, as well as in supermarkets, Sainsburys and Co-op.
