Peter Keegan is Aylesbury Waterside Theatre’s first Artist in Residence and is delighted to be offering this chance to come and learn to paint with him, inside the theatre, on this two day workshop from 10am – 4pm on Thursday 30th June and Friday 1st July 2022.

From a lone actor on stage, to a tableau - figure paintings set within the theatre have inspired artists throughout modern art history. Degas, Renoir, Hopper, and now Keegan: theatre paintings not only teach us about the magic and spectacle of the theatre but about the social and cultural history of the time.

When Peter began the residency in January 2020, no-one could have predicted quite what a pivotal moment in the theatre’s history the residency would capture, and this painting class is your chance to become a part of it too.

This 2 day course will take place in the theatre’s studio space and will use Peter’s own theatrical imagery and photographs, to teach you the fundamentals of painting figure scenes within an interior setting. Throughout the two days, Peter will show you how he approaches painting figures in his style.

This is an oil painting course, suitable for artists with some prior experience of painting, looking to improve their skills in this genre.

During the 2 days, you will cover:

• How to create an interesting and compelling composition

• Creating an under-drawing in paint

• How to build a strong, tonal design

• Colour harmonies and balance

• How to keep your paintings loose and fuss-free

• How to weave a narrative into your painting

Peter will provide all the paints you will need, along with palettes, easels, chairs, tables and studio sundries. You will need to bring your own brushes and grounds to work on and a painting shirt or apron. A full and detailed list of what to bring, will be sent to you when you purchase a ticket.

One ticket covers entry to sessions on both Thursday 30th June and Friday 1st July 2022.
