We all have our own stories - our own secrets. Too often we're told to be quiet. To write your memoir is to share your story. To read a memoir is to become part of somebody else's story, to see yourself reflected in their pages. In this special Literary Salon, we meet two brilliant outsiders - they've both fought hard to find their voice and make it heard. And what voices! What stories!
In 'Another Planet', Tracey Thorn returns to the scene of her 1970's childhood where 'life was slow and very little happened, over and over again' as her diary records. How did she get from there to 'Everything But the Girl?'
Dustin Lance Black - who wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay for 'Milk' and helped overturn California's anti-gay marriage Proposition 8 - grew up in a conservative Mormon household in Texas. In his inspiring memoir 'Mama's Boy', Black takes us back to his childhood and introduces us to his plucky, determined mother.
Hosted by Damian Barr, award winning writer and Literary Salon host, whose past guests include Armistead Maupin, Jojo Moyes, Caitlin Moran, Mary Beard and John Waters.
