MATILDA THE MUSICAL tells the story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny. The critically-acclaimed production is based on the beloved story by the incomparable Roald Dahl, with a book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by composer lyricist Tim Minchin.

Matilda The Musical

Matilda Wormwood is a remarkable 5 year old, but nobody seems to notice. Not least her family, who are far more interested in what’s on the television. Her father is a dodgy rogue trader dealing in second-hand cars, and her mother is unhealthily obsessed with the tarantella. Matilda can’t help but feel slightly short-changed.

At her new school, Matilda and the other pupils live in fear of the terrifying Miss Agatha Trunchbull. This horrid headmistress rules with an iron fist and a rotten programme of phys-ed. Only Matilda’s favourite teacher, Miss Honey, provides any relief from the Trunchbull’s petrifying patrols of Crunchem Hall.

When Matilda discovers her abilities are a little more magical than most, she sets out to start a revolting revolution of her own!

Produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company, this box office smash-hit is now in its tenth year in London.

Although designed as a variety theatre, the Edinburgh Playhouse opened in 1929 as Scotland’s second largest cinema. It was hugely successful and remained so until the downturn in cinema attendance in the early 70s. When it closed in November 1973, the building was at risk of demolition, but following several years of public ‘save the Playhouse’ campaigns it was eventually saved. It reopened in 1980 as the fully functional theatre it was always intended to be. Since then, it has hosted some of the world's biggest music and stand-up comedy acts including, Elton John, The Who, Nick Cave, Kevin Bridges and Tim Minchin and international hit musicals such as The Phantom of the Opera, We Will Rock You, Wicked, Matilda and Disney’s The Lion King.
