I Love You Because is a modern-day musical love story: think the cast of Friends goes to the bar from Cheers on a Tinder date. It is a nostalgic, feel-good heart-warming tale about love, life and relationships, full of all the ups and downs, lows and highs that you would expect from any classic romantic comedy. With a sumptuous score by Joshua Salzman, and the acerbic wit of Ryan Cunningham (book and lyrics), this drama-desk nominated show deserves to be seen.
This musical is the story of Austin, a young and uptight greeting-card writer whose life is changed when he meets the enigmatic and free-spirited photographer Marcy. Throw in a brother who sees himself as God’s-gift to women (provided there are no strings attached), a best friend who sees relationships as calculations and probabilities, and a whole host of slightly larger-than-life New-Yorkers, and you get the perfect Romance tale for the modern age: will they learn to love each other, warts and all?
With a nod towards Jane Austen’s exploration of what attracts people to one another, laced with some true Mr Darcy/Elizabeth Bennett passion-fuelled arguments, this musical is set to question what it is like to date in a modern world: how do you meet someone in today’s society? Is the best way to meet Mr or Mrs Right to date someone who is completely Mr or Mrs Wrong? Just how do you go from friends-with-benefits to something more? Is it even possible?
Studio at New Wimbledon Theatre is a 50-80 seat black box theatre, founded in 1994 in a ballroom where it is rumoured that Fred & Adele Astaire once danced. The Studio's particular achievement has been the development of work from new writers, comedians, directors and production companies.
