Frank Turner

Frank Turner is proud to donate £1 of each ticket sale to support WAYout Arts*, helping to change the lives of street, vulnerable and conflict affected young people through the arts.

The woman who invented rock’n’roll. A serial killer from the Deep South who plucked her victims from lonely hearts pages. The jazz-obsessed heiress who fought for the Free French. A rowdy coach house landlady from 17th century Camden Town accused of witchcraft. The Wild West vaudeville star shot by a small town outlaw. These are just a few of the fascinating characters to feature on No Man’s Land, Frank Turner’s most original project to date.

Although originally conceived in 2014, global events conspired to throw Turner off course from No Man’s Land. “The world went mad in 2016 and I felt like I needed to respond in a slightly more direct way”, explains Turner, who released the politically charged Be More Kind, which launched his outrage straight into the UK Album Chart Top Three. That’s not to say that No Man’s Land isn’t just as fired up, but despite the record’s implicit feminism, it doesn’t see Turner’s clambering onto any kind of soapbox. “It’s not telling anyone what to do or how to live or how to be”, he explains, prepared for a variety of different reactions to the project, including those who might be wondering if it’s really his place to be singing songs of disenfranchised women. “If there was a crowded field of people writing songs about Princess Kassiani then I would see the argument for me bowing out, but there isn’t,” he states. “No-one else is writing these songs right now. That’s why I want to share these stories.”

As part of Aylesbury Waterside Theatre’s commitment to accessibility and theatre for all, the venue has announced their support of the Sunflower Lanyard scheme. Launching to coincide with Learning Disability Week Mon 17 – Sun 23 Jun the sunflower lanyards are an initiative enabling those with a hidden disability who may require additional help to be easily recognised and assisted as needed.

Following a social media post in April highlighting the theatre’s relaxed performances as part of Autism Awareness Week, a patron came forward with feedback on how customer experience could be improved for those living with autism. Andy Rotherham from Aylesbury mentioned the sunflower scheme and also how the theatre could benefit from having quiet areas for customers needing a quiet space pre-show and during the interval. As well as implementing the lanyard initiative which signals to theatre staff that a customer has a hidden disability hence enabling appropriate care and support to be delivered in a non-intrusive manner, furniture has been moved in the venue allowing for two quieter breakout areas in Circle 2 and on the Promenade to be utilised.

In the UK 700,000 people live with autism, 1 million have learning disabilities, 850,000 have dementia and 11 million people have some sort of hearing loss. Hidden disabilities include, but are not limited to, dementia, autism, learning disabilities, anxiety issues, mental health impairments and hearing loss. The Waterside is in good company with the sunflower lanyard scheme which is already being used in airports including Gatwick, Heathrow, Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol and Inverness, as well as in supermarkets, Sainsburys and Co-op.
