This Is Elvis: Review Round Up
By Amy Cooper
All new musical This is Elvis recently began thrilling audiences. Starring the award-winning and internationally renowned Steve Michaels, the production decisively follows the events surrounding Elvis' '68 Comeback Special, culminating in a recreation of his first live appearance at the International Hotel in Vegas twelve months later. But what did critics visiting us in Wimbledon have to say about this dramatic staging of the King's monumental concert?
'It is a clever and bittersweet show...several cuts above the normal tribute musical...a tightly-written production that is entertaining and packs an emotional punch.
'The script...turns a relentless eye on Elvis' relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Parker is not present on stage in person, but his influence hangs everywhere.'
'Centre stage is an exciting performance by impersonator Steve Michaels, whose Elvis enraptured the many King fans in the...audience. They clapped, sang, swayed, danced and waved their arms to Michaels' powerful and uncannily accurate voice.'
Jenny, Culture Vulture
'All the hits come thick and fast including Heartbreak Hotel, Suspicious minds, All shook Up, Love me Tender and Blue Suede Shoes...all here to get you swaying in your seat.'
'Steve Michaels...is superb as the King. He strikes a remarkable facial resemblance and sounds and moves just like him. This isn't just another jukebox musical but one that sheds new light on the king and guarantees to send you home with a song in your heart and a skip in your step.'
Peter May, Church of England Newspaper
'SW19 was truly swept away in Elvis fever'
'In an electrifying performance, Michaels is the spitting image of Presley... from looks and stature right down to his iconic moves and, most importantly, that voice. He is so authentic...'
'It's Elvis heaven!'
'The actor-musician show genre is expected and rightly designed so... the spectacle is incredibly authentic'
Paul Johnson, Sardines Magazine
