10 Reasons to see Strictly Ballroom the Musical
1. This is your chance to see the iconic film brought to life
Strictly Ballroom has captured the hearts and minds of millions around the world ever since it burst on to the screen in 1992, and with the classic film now transformed into a glorious stage musical, this new production will give you a chance to experience the power of its ground-breaking story in a whole new form.
2. Its message is more inspiring and relevant than ever
At the heart of Strictly Ballroom The Musical is a powerful message of rebellion, passion, and learning to dance your own steps as Scott fights against the constraints of the traditional ballroom world. These ideas of embracing your own individuality and identity continue to be as inspirational and poignant now as they were when the film was first released, making it the perfect time to bring this story to the stage.
3. The show is born from the mind of cinematic icon Baz Luhrmann
With a back catalogue of film masterpieces that include Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet and The Great Gatsby, Baz Luhrmann is one of the most successful directors of the past thirty years, bringing his fresh, bold vision to film after film. Strictly Ballroom was the movie that started it all, and he has been involved in the creation of this production too, so this is a chance to experience the endless creative energy of his work live in the West End.
4. The award-winning Drew McOnie directs
Winner of an Olivier Award in 2016 for his dazzling choreography in In The Heights, Drew McOnie also choreographed the hit new productions of Hairspray, that's currently touring the UK, and Jesus Christ Superstar, which entranced theatregoers at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre in 2016, before returning to the same venue in 2017 to direct the critically acclaimed revival of On The Town. He has now created the unforgettable new production of Strictly Ballroom The Musical for the West End.
5. The show stars the hottest new couple in dance
Scott is played by Jonny Labey, the winner of ITV's Dance Dance Dance in 2017 whose sensational dance routines wowed the nation. Fran is played by Zizi Strallen, the music theatre superstar who captivated theatregoers in the stage production of Mary Poppins. Together, they're about to take the West End by storm as the couple who come together and discover that to be a winner, your steps don't need to be strictly ballroom...
6. And they're joined by one of the nation's best-loved recording artists
Since shooting to fame as the winner of Pop Idol, Will Young has become one of the country's most recognisable and celebrated singers, with both a string of chart hits and a highly successful stage career to his name. Now he takes on the brand-new role of Wally, Strictly Ballroom The Musical's anarchic spirit of dance freedom, showcasing his stunning voice on the Piccadilly Theatre stage.
7. The costumes have been designed by a four-time Oscar winner
Catherine Martin has won the much sought-after Academy Award statuettes for her incredible costume and production design on both Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby. From Hollywood to the West End, she's now bringing her boundlessly creative costume designs to the Piccadilly Theatre.
8. And speaking of award winners, Soutra Gilmour is designing the set
