2015 season at Edinburgh Playhouse

{socialbuttons}
By Sarah Moyes

Our Summer 2015 brochure has landed, and to celebrate we've asked some of our Edinburgh Playhouse staff to pick the shows they're most looking forward to seeing this year.

From West End musicals like Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and The Bodyguard to brand new productions like Love Me Tender, there's something for everyone to enjoy.  If it's comedy you like, then we've got Jimmy Carr, Michael McIntyre, Kevin Bridges and Bill Bailey. We've also got a full programme of Edinburgh Festival Fringe shows including BBC Radio's I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, Waverly Care Comedy Gala, and the Gilded Balloon 30th Anniversary Gala.  And we’ll be hosting a range of comedy, music and cabaret Fringe shows in The Boards, with the full programme to be announced shortly.

We're also excited to bring you a fantastic programme of Edinburgh International Festival shows including Ballett Zurich, Max Richter and a special performance from Sufjan Stevens.

Into The Woods

Adam Knight, General Manager
Into The Woods - Edinburgh Playhouse - ATG Tickets
10 years of Edinburgh Playhouse Stage Experience will be celebrated with Into The Woods - a fabulous fractured fairy-tale from the pen of Stephen Sondheim, the undisputed master of the musical. With credits including West Side Story, Gypsy, A Little Night Music and Sweeney Todd to name but a few, his lush music and lyrics follow in the great Broadway tradition of Rodgers & Hammerstein.

Giving 130 young people aged between 11 and 24 the opportunity to perform this wonderful show on the stage of the UK's largest theatre, led by a full professional team including a former Playhouse 'Javert' (director, Peter Corry), is a rare opportunity to celebrate the talent and ambition that exists in the young people of Scotland. I hope that you will all join us on our journey Into The Woods this summer.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Dean Feasby, Marketing Manager
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - Edinburgh Playhouse - ATG Tickets
Having worked on this show on its pre-West End run in Manchester and seeing it at the Savoy, I can confidently say Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is the hot musical tour of 2015.  Many will know the original film wasn't a musical so may not know what to expect. To those people I say the songs, choreography, razor-sharp script and energetic performances seamlessly meld together into a catchy, feel-good theatre experience - in a similar way to Legally Blonde, also a product of the great Jerry Mitchell.

I'm very excited to be receiving this tour in Edinburgh and know that audiences of all ages will love this show.

Shrek

Eve Alexander, Marketing Officer
Shrek the Musical - Edinburgh Playhouse - ATG Tickets
Having bought Shrek The Musical on DVD last year it's safe to say I am already a big fan of this show and I am very excited to see it live on the Edinburgh Playhouse stage this October.

If you have seen the hit DreamWorks film then you will know what the story is about. It's one of those feel-good shows with a story that appeals to audiences young and old!  Shrek the Musical brings all your favourite animated characters to life with extremely catchy musical numbers, a dazzling set and incredible costumes. It's guaranteed to put a big smile on your face from start to finish!

The Bodyguard

Lynsey Blyth, Group Sales Assistant
The Bodyguard - Edinburgh Playhouse - ATG Tickets
Having sold out in both Aberdeen and Glasgow I made sure to get my tickets early for The Bodyguard when it arrives here in Edinburgh! I have heard nothing but excellent reviews from everyone who has seen the show so it is definitely the show I'm most looking forward to in 2015!

Being a fan of the film I can't wait to see it come to life on the Playhouse stage along with all of Whitney Houston's well known hits.  Anyone who watched Alexandra Burke on the X Factor in 2008 will know just how well suited she is to this role, her phenomenal voice will undoubtedly make the show all the better. September can't come quick enough.

Mack & Mabel

Graham Duell, Box Office Assistant
Mack & Mabel - Edinburgh Playhouse - ATG Tickets
I first became aware of Mack & Mabel when I was working for in the West End in 1995. Many of my colleagues were 'resting' actors and there was a positive buzz when the announcement of a revival was to open at the Piccadilly Theatre. I hadn't heard of this show, but was told it was a great one to perform, which usually indicates that it's a great one to watch! I wasn't disappointed. The touching and turbulent love story of Mack Sennett (founder of the Keystone Kops) and Mabel Normand, it's packed with fantastic 'full-on' Showbiz Production Numbers.

Starring Michael Ball, it comes to us straight from this year's highly prestigious Chichester Festival. Join us here in November and Tap Your Troubles Away!

Priscilla Queen of the Desert

Sarah Jane Dooley, Development Manager
Priscilla Queen of the Desert - Edinburgh Playhouse - ATG Tickets
So much more than a glitterati of drag queens, Priscilla Queen of the Desert (not Desserts!) is a heart-warming story of lost love, lost youth and unbreakable friendship set against the backdrop of sunny Austr'ah'lia. While most of the costumes transform the stunning cast into delicious treats with fluorescent lycra, dresses made of flip flops, circustent harem pants and pom pom wigs, their vocal talent should not be underestimated.

Wearing their hearts on their sleeve and on a mission to have fun this Christmas, Priscilla delivers powerhouse tunes and ticks every box for a top night out. I could do with a touch of Boogie Wonderland this winter - round up the rainbows and all aboard the Priscilla party bus!

We'd love to hear what shows you're most looking forward to!
