Matt Smith is an English actor and director best known for his role as the eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who (2010-2013). A member of the National Youth Theatre, he went on to study Drama and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia.
His first professional performance was as Thomas Beckett in the National Youth Theatre’s Murder in The Cathedral (2003), later playing Basson (Koriview) in the National Youth Theatre’s production of The Master and the Margarita (2004). He followed these roles up with a string of performances at the National Theatre: Paul Darziger in The Shore of the Wide World (2005), Lockwood in the History Boys (2005) and Burn / Chatroom / Citizenship (2006). In 2007 he performed in the World Premiere of Swimming with Sharks along with Christian Slater, later going on to star in the critically acclaimed That Face at the Duke of York Theatre (2008).
In 2013 Matt took on his first musical role as Patrick Bateman in Rupert Goold's stage adaptation of American Psycho at the Almeida.
Matt Smith has also appeared in BBC productions of The Ruby in the Smoke series (2006) and Party Animals (2007).Read Less
