Maddy Prior is an English folk singer and the lead vocalist and founding member of Steeleye Span, formed in 1969. Prior was awarded the MBE for services to folk music in 2001.
Recordings include eclectic styles ranging from medieval to electric folk. With Steeleye Span, she has appeared on the television programme Electric Folk a number of times. After briefly leaving Steeleye Spans in 1997, her return in 2002 also saw her run and host an Arts Centre in Cumbria (from 2003). In 2007, Prior took to the road with The Carnival Band on their ‘Music for Tavern and Chapel’ tour. During the summer, she made a guest appearance with The Levellers at the Soldfest Festival in Cumbria, and in December of that year, the album Ringing the Changes was released. After appearing at the BBC’s Electric Proms in 2008, she toured the Eastern US, Australia and UK in 2009 with Steeleye Span. In recent years, a short Christmas tour with The Carnival Band (through November and December) has become a regular fixture; the band plays carols and seasonal music.
