Jennifer Ellison is an English actress, glamour model, television personality, dancer and singer. Ellison is perhaps best known for playing Emily Shadwick in the television soap opera Brookside until 2003, and as Meg Giry in the 2004 film adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera.
Ellison studied dance from the age of three, receiving qualifications from the Royal Academy of Dance and International Dance Teachers Association. She won Ballet and Modern Dance titles at the IDTA Theatre Dance Championships in 1996 and 1997, and was awarded the Carl Alan Award for outstanding services to dance, an industry award voted for by dance professionals.
From 1998 to 2003, Ellison performed in the soap opera Brookside. She has also acted in episodes of The Brief, Hotel Babylon, New Street Law and The Commander. Her TV show credits include the travel documentary Jennifer Ellison does Thailand (2003), the reality television show Hell's Kitchen (2004) (which she won), appearances on the celebrity challenge show With a Little Help From My Friends (2005), The Verdict (2007), Loose Women (2007), as a judge in the reality TV competition Dirty Dancing: The Time of Your Life (2007), and most recently, in 2012, contesting on Dancing On Ice (2012), reaching the semi-final. Ellison has also appeared as Meg Giry in the 2004 film version of The Phantom of the Opera, and starred in the 2008 English horror film The Cottage.
From 2003, Ellison also pursued a pop music career, releasing two pop rock cover singles, ‘Baby I Don’t Care’, which reached number 6 in the UK chart, and ‘Bye Bye Boy’, which reached number 13.
Her theatrical roles have included the part of Roxie Hart in the West End musical Chicago, performing at the Adelphi Theatre in 2004 and at the Cambridge Theatre in 2006. She subsequently toured the UK with Chicago between 2006 and 2007 and featured in a 10th Anniversary Gala performance of the musical at the end of 2007 alongside many other celebrities. In 2007, Ellison performed with Boeing Boeing at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London (then called Comedy Theatre), playing the role of an American TWA air stewardess, Gloria. In the same year, she also performed on the streets of Liverpool City as the Angel in a contemporary re-telling of the Nativity story for BBC Three. In 2008, Ellison appeared opposite Cilla Black and Les Dennis in the Liverpool Empire Theatre’s production of the pantomime Cinderella. In 2009 she performed in Jeff Wayne’s musical version of The War of the Worlds and appeared in the stage adaptation of Calendar Girls on its 2010 tour. In 2010, she returned to pantomime, appearing in Stoke’s Regent Theatre in Robinson Crusoe. She has been touring as Paulette in Legally Blonde the Musical and appears in Bromley’s 2012-2013 Peter Pan pantomime.
