Denise Black is an English actress, best known for playing Denise Osbourne in the ITV1 soap Coronation Street (1992-1996, returning in 2007) and Hazel Tyler in Channel 4 TV's Queer As Folk in 1999 and 2000.
Whilst performing at the Newcastle Playhouse in La Pasionaria, she struck up a friendship with fellow actors Josie Lawrence and Kate McKenzie. They subsequently formed a jazz group, Denise Black and the Kray Sisters, and it was her relationship with Lawrence that subsequently helped land Denise a part in Channel 4’s show Saturday Live and Josie. Making her television drama debut in 1990 in Casualty, she has also appeared in The Bill, New Tricks, Doc Martin, Bad Girls, and Doctors, as well as ITV’s prime-time show Coronation Street.
Relatively early in her early stage career, Denise took to the Donmar Warehouse’s stage with Julian Clary and, in 1998 appeared at the Oldham Coliseum in The Threepenny Opera. She has also performed as Goneril in Shakespeare's King Lear, toured in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night with the Cambridge Touring Company, and given a series of cabaret shows with her husband in 2009. In August 2010, Black's band played at the Edinburgh Festival when she was in mid-UK national tour of a stage version of Calendar Girls. From September 2011, Denise played the role of Mother Superior in the first UK tour of Sister Act the Musical.
