Benedict Cumberbatch is a London born actor who is most famously known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in the BBC drama Sherlock. He studied drama at the University of Manchester before going on to train at the London Academy of Dramatic Art.
In 2011 he won the Oliver Award, Evening Standard Award and Critics' Circle Theatre Award for his role in the Danny Boyle stage production of Frankenstein. He was also part of the New Shakespeare company’s 2001 and 2002 season at the Open Air Theatre, in which he played major roles in some of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, including Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet and Orlando in As You Like It.
Benedict has starred in a number of productions at the Almeida Theatre such as Lady From The Sea (2003), Hedda Gabbler (2005), and Period of Adjustment (2006).
In 2013 he appeared in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, providing the voice and motion capture for Smaug the dragon and the Necromancer.Read Less
