This spring, the fastest selling West End show in history arrives at the New Victoria Theatre, Woking. The spectacular musical theatre event Dirty Dancing comes alive on stage for three weeks from Tuesday 30 April - Saturday 18 May.
An unprecedented live experience, exploding with heart-pounding music, passionate romance and sensationally sexy dancing - this show has been enjoyed by millions across the globe, telling the timeless story of Baby and Johnny.
It's the summer of 1963, and 17 year old Frances 'Baby' Houseman is about to learn some major lessons in life as well as a thing or two about dancing.
On holiday in New York's Catskill Mountains with her older sister and parents, Baby shows little interest in the resort activities, and instead discovers her own entertainment when she stumbles upon the staff quarters when an all-night dance party is in full swing. Mesmerised by the raunchy dance moves and the pounding rhythms, Baby can't wait to be part of the scene, especially when she catches sight of Johnny Castle the resort dance instructor.
Baby's life is about to change forever as she is thrown in at the deep end as Johnny's leading lady both on-stage and off with breathtaking consequences.
The inspiration behind the film came from author Eleanor Bergstein’s idea to write a more extensive story focusing on the ‘dirty dancing’ competitions of her youth. The film, made on a shoestring budget of five million dollars, went on to become a worldwide hit at the box office and was ranked the fifth highest grossing film of 1987. It generated two multi-platinum soundtracks that sold over 39 million copies and launched the careers of Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. The huge impact and appeal of the film, with audiences watching it over and over again led to the idea that the fans really wanted to experience it first hand, and hence Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story on Stage was born!
Dirty Dancing played for five triumphant years at London’s Aldwych Theatre, breaking all box office records with advanced ticket sales of over £15 million, which made it the fastest ever selling West End show.
Staying true to the much-loved film, the show follows Baby and Johnny through their summer together in 1963. Featuring the hit songs Hungry Eyes, Hey Baby, Do You Love Me? and the heart stopping I’ve Had the Time of My Life coupled with dynamic choreography you are assured a night out at the theatre like no other! Don’t miss your chance to see this classic story live on stage - you’ll be sure to have the time of your life!
