Steeped in the Russian classical tradition, Sofia National Ballet visits the New Victoria Theatre, Woking for the very first time, performing three classic masterpieces, Don Quixote, Giselle and Swan Lake from Thu 25 - Sat 27 July.
Sofia National Ballet has become a national cultural institution in Bulgaria and is now fast developing an international reputation for its remarkable and breath-taking performances. Featuring a company of 90 performers including an acclaimed corps de ballet and a full orchestra, their outstanding talent is perfectly showcased as they delight audiences with their magnificent artistry, elaborate sets and beautiful costumes.
Thrilling technique, pure panache and explosive balletic fireworks combine to produce the Russian showpiece Don Quixote on Thursday 25 July. This is the enchanting story of an eccentric, yet noble old gentleman Don Quixote. His dreams of a fantasy world full of brave knights and beautiful ladies take us on a chivalrous adventure with his trusty servant. Love, duels and spectacular choreography combine with a dash of Spanish passion in one of the most beautiful and moving of all ballets.
Friday 26 July brings the most poignant of all classical ballets, Giselle to the stage. Combining powerful emotions and visual splendour in a chilling and heart-rending tale of love, treachery and forgiveness from beyond the grave. The story of Giselle and her aristocratic but duplicitous lover Albrecht is set to a glorious score and brought to life by the magnificent costumes and virtuoso performances of Sofia National Ballet.
Completing the repertoire will be two performances on Saturday 27 July of the greatest romantic ballet of all time, Swan Lake. With Tchaikovsky’s haunting and unforgettable score, this compelling tale of tragic romance has it all from the impressive splendour of the Palace ballroom to the moon-lit lake where swans glide in perfect formation. From Odile, the temptress in black tulle as she seduces the Prince by spinning with captivating precision to the spellbound purity of the swan queen, Odette as she flutters with emotional intensity, the dual role of Odette/Odile is one of ballet’s most unmissable technical challenges.
A perfect experience for both the first-time ballet goer to the seasoned attendee - don’t miss your chance to witness these magnificent ballets on your doorstep!
