Dance lovers shall be treated to an enchantingly magical production, as the renowned dance company Northern Ballet return with their breathtaking adaptation of Beauty & the Beast from Tue 30 October – Sat 3 November.
Delighting adults and children alike, this classic story unfolds in an enthralling world inhabited by fairies, sprites and goblins as the company sparkle in a kaleidoscope of colour with breathtaking dancing accompanied by an infectious score played by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia.
A very unique and hard discipline, Northern Ballet dancers follow a rigorous schedule of rehearsals and classes whilst on tour and at the company’s base in Leeds. This structure of classes and a special diet combined with 12 weeks of continuous performances show the dedication and passion needed for this profession and the results are conveyed in the high quality of their productions.
This new production, choreographed by David Nixon OBE, makes an exciting addition to the Company’s repertoire of family ballets. Rediscovering the magical aspects of this traditional fairytale, Beauty & the Beast explores the values that lie at its heart – in a battle between the forces of good and evil and that true love can conquer all.
Beauty & the Beast tells the story of a young prince who is magically transformed into a beast as a punishment for his arrogance and cursed to live alone in his castle until the spell is broken by the sacrifice of true love. In Beauty’s presence the Beast remembers the joy he once had and his willingness to sacrifice his life for her permits his final transformation back to a handsome Prince.
Audiences will be transported into an enchanting world of colour, with an elaborate mirrored set from Duncan Hayler, haute couture-style costumes designed by David Nixon and an infectious score from Saint-Säens, Bizet, Debussy and Glazunov, played live by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia.
Northern Ballet Artistic Director David Nixon OBE said;
‘I wanted to create a family show which would be equally popular with both children and adults alike. Beauty & the Beast is a classic fairytale of a good versus evil, exploring the concept of beauty on the inside and the outside. This is not an adaptation of the Disney version of the story – it is based on the original tale and will embrace the darker elements of the tale as well as the lighter moments.’
Carving a unique place in UK’s cultural landscape and voted Britain’s favourite ballet company for three consecutive years at the National Dance Awards, Northern Ballet have become a perennial visitor to the New Victoria Theatre, Woking since the theatre opened in 1992. Delighting audiences with superb productions of Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Peter Pan, Wuthering Heights, Madame Butterfly, Midsummer Night’s Dream and Cleopatra. Northern Ballet are celebrated for approaching unusual subjects with their unique, vivid and engaging manner, reinforcing why they continue to be one of the best ballet companies.
