A dream of a production from the renowned Northern Ballet

Dance lovers shall be treated to an enchanting production this September, as the renowned dance company Northern Ballet bring a dose of magic with their interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, at the New Victoria Theatre, Woking from Tue 24 – Sat 28 September.

Hailed by audiences and critics alike, 2013 brings the revival of the much loved Olivier-nominated dance version of Shakespeare’s classic, choreographed by Artistic Director David Nixon OBE.

In Northern Ballet’s adaptation of the Shakespeare play, which is co-directed by Patricia Doyle, the romantic antics of a touring dance company are played out as it travels by sleeper train from London to Edinburgh. Nixon’s choreography brings out the comedy, romance and entanglements of this delightful story. His Dior-inspired costumes from the lavish wings to chiffon gowns add a unique element to the piece. Audiences will be transported into the stylish world of elegance and glamour, with Duncan Hayler’s 1940s black and white sets a dazzling contrast to the glorious Technicolour of the dreamworld where Puck’s magical mayhem weaves a tangled web of love.

Northern Ballet Artistic Director David Nixon says,
‘My version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is about young dancers and the passions and tribulations that a young touring company get themselves entangled in. It was really important to me to bring the romantic elements out of this much loved story. I always enjoy seeing the reaction of the audience to this ballet. It’s great to hear them laughing! The ballet is very playful and uplifting and I think many people are pleasantly surprised to see so much humour captured in dance.’

Puck, Bottom, Titania, Oberon and the company bring an evening of dance, breathtaking sets and beautiful costumes, with music by Mendelssohn and Brahms played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia.

Carving a unique place in UK’s cultural landscape and voted Britain’s favourite ballet company for three consecutive years at the National Dance Awards, Northern Ballet have become a perennial visitor to the New Victoria Theatre, Woking since the theatre opened in 1992. Delighting audiences with superb productions of Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Peter Pan, Wuthering Heights, Madame Butterfly, Cleopatra and Beauty & the Beast. Northern Ballet are celebrated for approaching unusual subjects with their unique, vivid and engaging manner, reinforcing why they continue to be one of the best ballet companies.
