The New Alexandra Theatre has an exciting opportunity for a passionate and motivated individual to join the team as Maintenance Assistant.  This role is an integral part of our busy regional venue. The successful candidate will be responsible for the day to day upkeep of the venue, building excellent relationships with our contractors, and assisting the venue management in ensuring the venues compliance with all Health and Safety legislation, Risk Management and Fire Safety audits.


Reporting to the Technical Manager, the successful candidate will be proactive and efficient with excellent communication skills. Taking pride in the building will be your priority and excellent attention to detail is essential!


Key Responsibilities:

  • To maintain, replace and renew the fixtures & fittings of the theatre
  • To ensure the painting and decoration of the venue is maintained to a high standard, performing any repairs necessary in a manner suitable to the style and history of the building
  • To oversee contractor visits, ensuring work briefs are adhered to and appropriate inspections are carried out in a timely and effective manner. It is the responsibility of the Maintenance Assistant to ensure that all appropriate paperwork is completed and understood, and permits obtained and issued where necessary.
  • To implement and comply with the company Health & Safety Policy and CDM regulations, maintaining the safest possible environment for your colleagues, visiting companies and customers
  • To source information and quotes upon request for anything requiring the use of contractors, and ensure that the job brief is complete and comprehensive for any work needing to be carried out.
  • To perform periodic testing of various aspects of the theatre including fire alarm
  • To complete any further training as appropriate and necessary according to venue needs.


  • Ability to perform basic electrical, plumbing, decoration and carpentry tasks
  • Basic knowledge of boilers and how to maintain
  • Understanding of effective water management
  • Ability to use own initiative and have a pro-active approach to problem solving
  • A knowledge of Health and Safety legislation
  • Dedicated, hard-working and physically fit
  • An ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends where needed
  • Knowledge & understanding of building maintenance and issues faced by old buildings
