More information

We are looking for a commercially astute and inspiring leader to join our theatre and team at the Grand Opera House, York.

The Grand Opera House is a unique venue with a fascinating history. Converted and opening as a theatre in 1902, it has since featured a broad and popular programme of live entertainment which continues to this day. Situated close to the busy city centre, the theatre is in a central location in a town popular with tourists and students; understanding how to tap into these fluctuating markets as well as build relationships with established local groups is key to making this venue a success.

As part of the Ambassador Theatre Group, the theatre is supported by specialist teams in our London and Woking offices, ranging from HR and Finance to Programming and Customer Experience, and a dedicated leadership team with extensive experience of theatre management. The role of General Manager is therefore an exciting opportunity for an exceptional leader of people to engage in a very varied role, focussed on making the most of the opportunities York presents with the support of the rest of the ATG team behind them.

In particular, the General Manager is responsible for leading a multi-skilled team; growing the venue’s reputation locally, regionally and nationally with stakeholders, producers and promoters; generating sponsorship income; driving ticketing and commercial retail revenue; implementing growth plans; and devising, with colleagues, a development plan to maximise the potential of the venue.

To succeed in this role you will need to be entrepreneurial, creative, comfortable with variety and open-minded. You'll need to have solid management skills and be able to balance the very broadest range of requirements and resources effectively. You'll be able to make the most of opportunities available to you and able to build on the successes of the previous GM to ensure our financial targets are met. A proven ability to consolidate costs and generate new sources of income is essential, as is a proven ability to effectively manage a diverse team.

Please feel free to contact us for an informal discussion about the role prior to applying.
