Michael Ball Overview

Michael Ball is a British actor, singer, radio and TV presenter.

He has appeared in a number of well known musicals. His debut was in Godspell in 1984, and the following year he went on to play Marius in the original London cast of Les Miserables, which showed first at The Barbican Centre and then at the West End’s Palace Theatre. From then on, he has rarely left the West End stage, with credits including the part of Raoul in Phantom of the Opera (1987), Alex in Aspects of Love (which also toured to Broadway, 1989), Giorgio in Passion (1996), Caractus Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (2002), and Count Fosco in The Woman in White (which also toured to Broadway, 2005). In 2007 he played Hajj in the English National Opera’s Kismet and Edna Turnblad in Hairspray. As well as returning to this latter role in 2010 for its UK tour, his performance as Edna also won him the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2008. 2011 saw him play the title role in Sweeney Todd at the Chichester Festival Theatre, under Jonathan Kent’s direction.

Other stage credits include performing in Divas at the Donmar at the Donmar Warehouse in 2001, and in Alone Together at the Haymarket Theatre in the West End in 2004. Operatic performances include as Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance at the Opera House, Manchester (1984), and as Reginald Bunthorn in Patience for the New York City Opera (2004).

Screen work includes several Michael Ball shows with Carlton TV between the years 1993 and 1998. He has hosted ITV’s This Morning, and judged its Soap Star Superstar in 2007.
