Maureen Lipman Overview

Maureen Lipman, CBE, is a British film, theatre and television actress, columnist and comedienne.

A member of Laurence Olivier’s Royal National Theatre Company at The Old Vic, she has worked in the theatre for over thirty years, perhaps most famously playing Aunt Eller to Hugh Jackman’s Curly in the National Theatre’s Oklahoma! (1998-9). Other work includes playing Mrs Malaprop in The Rivals at Manchester’s Royal Exchange (1996) and the title role in Peggy for You at the Hampstead Theatre, in the West End and on tour (1999). In 2001 she played Nina in Sitting Pretty, and appeared in The Vagina Monologues. 2004 saw her play Mrs Meers in Thoroughly Modern Millie in the West End, and Dim Sum in Aladdin at the Old Vic Theatre under Sean Mathias’ direction. In 2006 she gained the part of Florence in Glorious in the West End and the starring role in Martha Josie and the Chinese Elvis on tour. She has recently made a 2009 appearance in Trevor Nunn’s A Little Night Music, first performed at the Chocolate Factory before transferring to the Garrick in the West End. She returned to the Garrick between 2010 and 2011 to play Clara Soppit in When We Are Married, a play nominated for the Olivier Award for Best Ensemble Play.

Early film work includes Captain Jack, Solomon & Gaenor, and The Discovery of Heaven. She then played the part of the mother in Roman Polanski’s award winning The Pianist (2001), and followed this up with parts in An Hour in Paradise (2002), The Agent (2008) and Caught in the Act (2008). Most recently in 2010, she filmed Kafka’s Metamorphosis and the BBC’s My Story.

Television work includes Coronation Street, George Eliot: A Scandalous Life, and Jonathan Creek, all in 2002. With appearances on Art Deco Designs and the part of Maggie Wych in The Fugitives (2004), she appeared on In Search of Style in 2005. Subsequent shows have included Dr Who (2006), Casualty (2007), He Kills Coppers (2008), and in 2009, the part of Irene in Ladies of Letters, and parts in Skins and Minder. She is well known for playing Joyce Grenfell in the biographical show Re: Joyce!, which she co-wrote. She has also appeared on Just A Minute, the Paul O’Grady Show, The News Quiz, This Week, Have I Got News For You, and as a celebrity contestant on Comic Relief Does The Apprentice.
