Matthew MacFayden is an English screen and stage actor known for his role as MI-5 officer Tom Quinn in the hit BBC drama Spooks (2002-2011). After training at RADA Matthew worked extensively with stage company Cheek by Jowl, and featured in a number of their productions including The Duchess of Malfi (1995), Much Ado about Nothing (1998) and A School for Scandal (1998). In 2005 he took on the role of the reckless but redeemable Prince Hal in both parts one and two of Henry VI (2005) at the Royal National Theatre.
Matthew’s break on the big screen saw him portray Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice (2005) which saw him nominated for a London Film Critics Circle Award for Best British Newcomer. Matthew has gone from strength to strength featuring in a number of successful films including black comedy Death at a Funeral (2007), thriller Incendiary (2008), Athos in The Three Musketeers (2011) and the adulterous Oblonsky in the 2012 film adaptation of Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina.
He has been equally successful on television with leading roles in tv movies such as Secret Life (2007) which won him a Royal Television Society award for Best Actor in 2008 along with a nomination for a BAFTA TV Award. He also starred in American mini-series The Pillars of the Earth (2010) and portrayed the middle Logan Mountstuart in the acclaimed Channel 4 adaptation of William Boyd’s Any Human Heart (2010). He was most recently seen as Detective Inspector Edmund Reid in BBC murder mystery series Ripper Street (2012-2013)
