Maria Friedman is an award-winning singer and stage actress best known for her roles in Stephen Sondheim musicals such as Merrily We Roll Along and Passion (1996), the latter of which won her Best Actress in a Musical at the Olivier Awards.
Her stage career began with an understudy role in the national tour of Oklahoma! (1980), covering the roles of Ado Annie and Laurey. The roles which have garnered her the greatest praise include Hayyah in The Ghetto at Royal National Theatre, the roles ofDot/Marie in Sunday in the Park with George (1990) at the Royal National Theatre for which she was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical at the Olivier Awards, in her solo project Maria Friedman by Special Arrangement at the Donmar Warehouse for which she was awarded an Olivier for Best Entertainment (1995), and as Roxie Hart in Chicago, which also saw her nominated for Best Actress in a Musical. She has been nominated for a total of seven Olivier awards and has won three.
Maria made her directorial debut with Merrily We Roll Along at the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2012.
