Juanjo Mena

Juanjo Mena is a Spanish conductor who studied music at the Vitoria-Gasteiz Conservatory and at the Madird Royal Conservatory. He subsequently studied conducting in Munich on a Guridi-Bernaola scholarship, and in 1997 was selected by the Basque Government to form the Youth Orchestra of Euskal Herria. He became associate conductor of the Euskadi Symphony Orchestra, and between 1999 and 2008 worked as artistic director and principal conductor of the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra.... Read more >>

Juanjo Mena Overview

Juanjo Mena is a Spanish conductor who studied music at the Vitoria-Gasteiz Conservatory and at the Madird Royal Conservatory. He subsequently studied conducting in Munich on a Guridi-Bernaola scholarship, and in 1997 was selected by the Basque Government to form the Youth Orchestra of Euskal Herria. He became associate conductor of the Euskadi Symphony Orchestra, and between 1999 and 2008 worked as artistic director and principal conductor of the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra. He served as principal guest conductor of the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa from 2007 to 2010, and has been principal guest conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra since 2007. From 2011 Mena became chief conductor of the BBC’s Philharmonic Orchestra.
