Janie Dee Overview

Janie Dee is a proficient actress who most recently has played the part of Belinda Blair in Lindsay Posner’s highly reputed production of Noises Off, produced by and performed at The Old Vic in 2012 before transferring to the West End’s Novello Theatre.

Janie Dee’s stage career started in 1993 with the part of Lady Capulet in Dame Judi Dench’s New English Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. In both 1994 and 1995 she performed at the Royal National Theatre, and in 1996 worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 2000 Janie Dee was given the Lawrence Olivier and London Evening Standard Critics’ Circle Award for Best Actress with Comic Potential. She performed in the play Comic Potential at the Lyric Theatre in the West End in 2000, before transferring with it to Manhattan Theatre in 2001. Subsequent work included productions at the Chichester Festival Theatre (2001 and 2010), Bath Theatre Royal (2003 and 2005), and Gate Theatre Dublin (2005). At Bath, Dee repeatedly worked with prestigious director Peter Hall. Performances outdoors have included as Olivia in Regent Park’s Twelfth Night in 2008, and in All’s Well That Ends Well in Shakespeare’s Globe in 2011.

Dee’s musical parts include Carrie Pipperidge in Nicholas Hytner’s production of Carousel at the National Theatre, for which she was awarded an Olivier Award in 1992. She has performed in Paradise Moscow at the Opera North (2001), as Janie in Diva at the Donmar, (2002), and Edyth in My One and Only at Chichester Festival Theatre and in the West End (also 2002). In 2006 she took the title female role in Mack and Mabel on its West End and National Tour, and in 2011 played Anna in The King and I at Curve Theatre.

On screen, Dee’s television parts include Heartbeat (1998), Midsomer Murders (2001), the BBC’s Death in Holy Orders and The Murder Room (in 2002 to 2003), and the part of Jane in the pilot of Here Comes the Queen in 2007. Most recently, she played the part of Emma in the BBC’s Harold Pinter: A Celebration, in 2010. Feature films include The Virtuoso (1998), Friends & Enemies (2006), Celebration (2006) and Me and Orson Welles (2008). Radio parts includes work with Martin Jarvis: Dr. No (2007), Man of the Moment (2009), and From Russia With Love and Skios in 2012.
