Gary Barlow Overview

Gary Barlow OBE is a British singer, songwriter, pianist and record producer. The lead vocalist of Take That, he is also a judge on The X Factor.

Born in Cheshire, Gary taught himself how to play the piano at 10 years old and began writing songs at 15. After gigging around north England during his teens, he was approached by manager Nigel Martin-Smith to front a new boy band – Take That – as its lead singer. Between 1990 and 1996, Take That had 8 UK number 1s and a huge number of top 10 singles. Many of these were written by Gary Barlow, including the international smash hit ‘Back for Good’, which reached number 1 in 31 countries.

In 1996, the band hung up their dancing shoes and Barlow started a successful solo career before placing more emphasis on songwriting and producing. He has written songs for Delta Goodrem, Donny Osmand, Atomic Kitten, Charlotte Church, and collaborated with Christina Aguilera and Elton John. In 2005, Take That returned in full force, breaking records when they sold over 1 million tickets in just 5 hours.

Gary Barlow has won many awards, including five Ivor Novellos. He has organised and participated in many large projects for charity, including gathering a team of celebrities to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in 2009 for Comic Relief and organising charity concerts for Children in Need in 2009 and 2011. Gary joined the X Factor panel of judges in 2011.
