Denise Welch is an English actress, dancer and television presenter, best known for her roles in Coronation Street and Waterloo Road, and for working on Loose Women. Early on in her career, after studying at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London, Denise joined the Live Theatre Company in Newcastle, featuring in various productions including an Alan Ayckbourn quartet of plays. In 1984 she played the role of Sandy in the popular musical Grease at Leicester’s Haymarket Theatre. Though she has spent most of her time developing her on screen career, in 2004 she won Manchester Evening News’ Best Actress for her performance at the Royal Exchange in The Rise & Fall of Little Voice. In 2012, she performed in the touring production of Steel Magnolias.
Welch’s first TV appearance was in Barriers in 1981. Following various roles in many different television shows, she shot to fame when cast as Marsha Stubbs in ITV’s drama series Soldier Soldier, the success of which enabled her to release a single in 1995 (which spent the next three weeks in the UK singles charts). Subsequently cast as Natalie Horrocks in Coronation Street (the character was introduced in 1997), she went on to guest star in Holby City (2002), The Bill (1997 and 2006), Doctors (2004), and Hollyoaks (2006) among numerous others. Between 2006 and 2010 she appeared as French teacher Steph Haydock in BBC’s darama series Waterloo Road, and has been cast in Benidorm’s 4th series.
Welch is a proficient television host, hosting The Real DIY Show in 2000 and Soap Fever for ITV, as well as working as a regular panelist on ITV1’s topical chat show Loose Women. She has appeared in ITV’s celebrity singing contest Stars In Their Eyes (1999), the celebrity version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (2008), 10 Years Younger (2009), was a contestant on Dancing on Ice (2011), and in January 2012 was crowned the winner of Celebrity Big Brother.
