Brendan Coyle

Brendan Coyle is a British actor who studied drama in Dublin before attending London’s Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. Brendan Coyle Overview

Brendan Coyle is a British actor who studied drama in Dublin before attending London’s Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. Brendan is best known for his portrayal of John Bates in period drama Downton Abbey (2010-2013), for which he has been nominated for a number of awards including Primetime Emmys, Golden Nymphs and BAFTA Television awards.

Brendan was part of the original cast of haunting drama The Weir at the Royal Court Theatre, for which he won an Olivier and a New York Critics Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut when the play transferred in 1999. Brendan went on to perform in productions of The Bear (2002), Buried Child (2004), The Late Henry Moss (2005) and Chain Play II (2008).  

On television Brendan has had small roles in The Bill (1992), Silent Witness (1996), and Jericho (2005) as well as recurring roles in BBC series Lark Rise to Candleford (2008-2010) and leading role in Sky comedy Starlings (2012-2013)
