In the opera world, Verdi’s La traviata is one of the most famous of all time. But, if you’re new to opera, you’re probably wondering what the appeal is. Hair-raising music aside, this opera follows a narrative that we, as an audience, never seem to tire of – a passionate love, fated to end in tragedy. From The Notebook to The Titanic, it’s everywhere. In fact, La traviatais a direct mirror of Moulin Rouge, telling the tale of a glamorous courtesan in Paris who falls for a penniless artist. If you’ve seen Moulin Rouge, then you’ll probably have guessed how this one ends, but why not experience our five-star production and find out for yourself.

Welsh National Opera - La traviata

Always the belle of the ball, Violetta, the most elegant courtesan in all of Paris, has her choice of wealthy admirers falling at her feet. She lives for the glamorous lifestyle of high society, but when she finds herself deeply in love with the penniless aristocratic poet Alfredo, she is willing to give everything up for him. Can she be accepted just as a woman who has fallen in love, or is she to remain a ‘fallen woman’ whose love has no future?

Based on Alexandre Dumas fils’s novel, La Dame aux Camélias, Verdi’s timeless opera features some of the most evocative arias and melodies including the instantly recognisable Brindisi (the drinking song) and the beautifully poignant finale, Addio del passato. Elegant and highly charged, WNO’s five-star production will leave you in no doubt why this heart-wrenching tale of thwarted love, scandal and self-sacrifice makes La traviata a favourite with audiences across the world.

Sung in Italian, with English surtitles.

The Bristol Hippodrome, the city’s very own West End theatre, opened its doors on 16 December 1912 when the curtain rose for the first time on what was generally agreed to be Oswald Stoll’s most magnificent provincial theatre.

It is a superb example of the grand architecture of the late Victorian era and is one of the masterpieces of design by Frank Matcham, the most eminent theatre architect of his time.

Towards the beginning of the century, the theatre staged a variety of acts as a Music Hall. Since then, and due to the fact that it has one of the largest theatre stages in Britain, The Bristol Hippodrome has established itself on the touring circuit for all major musical productions, thus becoming known as Bristol’s West End Theatre.
